Bureaucratic Stupidity
Recently at work, I encountered my first case ever, of bureaucratic stupidity. Due to “security concerns”, firewall ports are not to be opened 2 ways (ie only uni-directional).
In the firewall port application form, the column says “Please state uni directional or bi-directional”. Since I needed Server A to talk to Client B both ways, I filled in “bi-directional”. The application form was rejected, with the “security concerns” as the reason for rejection.
However, when I re-filled the form and now I split it up like so:
1. Sever A -> Client B (uni-directional)
2. Client B -> Server A (uni-directional)
They approved it. Makes you go “doh!” doesn’t it?
